A car that does not run, failed inspection or carries a salvage title still has value in parts, metal and repairable buyers. Your main choices are an online junk-car buyer (free towing, fixed offer), a local salvage yard (scrap weight price), or a private sale to a mechanic or flipper.
Before you call anyone
- Find the title. In SC, a missing title can be replaced through SCDMV before the sale, which typically raises offers.
- Describe damage accurately: flood, fire, airbag deployment, missing catalytic converter or wheels all change the price.
- Compare a scrap-yard quote (price per ton) with two online offers.
- Remove plates, toll tags and personal items before the tow truck arrives; get a receipt naming the buyer.
Salvage vs. rebuilt title
A salvage car cannot be registered until repaired and inspected; rebuilt cars can be driven but sell for less. Tell buyers which you have. Flippers who buy at salvage auctions can find more in our vehicle auctions guides.

Get three numbers before you sell
- Instant offer (fastest, lowest effort).
- Dealer trade or appraisal (may save sales tax on your next car in some states; SC caps sales tax/IMF at $500).
- Private sale or auction (usually the most money, most work).
Enter the same mileage, condition and options everywhere, then compare what you net after fees, towing and your time.
Safety and scam checklist
- Meet in daylight at a public place; many police departments offer safe exchange spots.
- Accept cash you can verify at your bank, or a cashier's check confirmed by calling the issuing bank directly. Never accept overpayment "refunds".
- Do not sign the title until funds are cleared. Remove your plate and personal data (garage remote, phone pairing, toll tag).
- Pay off or get a payoff letter from your lender first if there is a lien.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I sell a car without a title?
- Some buyers accept no-title vehicles where state law permits, often for older cars, but you will be offered less. Replacing the title first is usually worth it.
- Should I part it out?
- Only if you have space, tools and time. Parting out can earn more but leaves you with a shell to scrap.
